The Versatility of Minced Beef

For many, minced beef is a staple shopping list item that makes its way into the trolley on a weekly basis. It is arguably one of Britain’s favourite cuts and for very good reason. Part of its appeal comes from the fact it can be used in so many ways, seasoned with all nature of herbs and spices, and mixed with a variety of vegetables and sauces.

It gives us the ability to make comforting classics as well as recreate recipes from across the globe. From midweek cottage pies to burgers and bolognese to chilli it is the basis for so many quick and delicious meals. So, this week, we thought we’d take the opportunity to sing its praises and talk more about this incredibly versatile meat.

Bolognese

Beef mince is beef that has either been finely chopped by hand or prepared with a mincing machine. Ours is made with a typical meat grinder, so the mince is proper ‘butcher’s mince’ rather than the longer chains you’d usually see in the supermarket.

Minced beef can differ in fat content from a lean 5% up to 25% and the reason this varies is down to where it comes from. Sirloin, for instance, is relatively low-fat compared to cuts such as porterhouse. The mince in our Lincoln Red Beef boxes mainly comes from the chuck and shoulder area,

as well as any trimmings from the roasting joints, steaks, and diced beef as we want to waste as little as possible. This results in mince that has an average fat content of around 15%.

Now, you may think that the leaner the mince, the better but the fat contributes to flavour and texture which is why a slightly higher fat content is recommended for many recipes. The fat also prevents the meat from drying out, ensuring it stays juicy and that the flavour can permeate throughout the dish.

When it comes to cooking, many methods can be used for beef mince including frying, grilling, oven baking and even putting it in a slow cooker. To get the best flavour from your mince when cooking though, we would recommend always browning it first before combining it with other ingredients.
