A Week on the Estate: Spring Arrives, Healing Hikes & First Greens

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

The first few weeks of May gave us the rainfall and warmth we’d been waiting for. Across the estate, nature has sprung into verdant life.

After last weekend’s showers, Nicky Coxon popped down to the community garden with a couple of (so-called!) volunteers. The soil was suitably refreshed and the project’s very first greens have emerged into the light of day. There’s no time to rest, alas, as the weeds also appreciated the rain.

National Walking Month and Mental Health Awareness Week have happily coincided with warmer weather, longer days and spring in full swing. It’s been a tough year for mental health but the benefits of immersing yourself in the sights, sounds and sensations of the countryside are hard to overstate.

We want to help both casual strollers and hard-core hikers to find as much joy in our gorgeous corner of the Lincolnshire Wolds as we do. The birds are singing, the bees and butterflies are hard at work, the Lincoln Reds are grazing our pastures, the crops are bursting forth and the trees are in their effusive prime. To get the most out of spring, we recommend our simple three-point plan:

  1. Head to our walking page where you’ll find downloadable trail guides to suit every walker.
  2. Pre-book your free tea, coffee, soup or tasty snack from The Old School Tea & Coffee Shop (open from 11am-3pm, Monday to Sunday). Should you choose to pay for your drink or snack, any proceeds will be used to fund community projects. The Old School is a short stroll from the Sheepdip Paddock temporary parking area on Brinkhill Road.
  3. Once you’ve muddied your boots, we’d like to offer you a complimentary certificate of achievement. Just head to the ‘Walking in the Wolds Certificate’ page, tap in a few details and keep an eye on your inbox.

Speaking of walking trails, we’d like to thank Andy and Jack for mowing and matting the Sheepdip Paddock temporary parking area. The fixing pegs and new growth will help secure the grippy surface, and parking will soon be a bit less exciting for our all-weather hikers.

Finally, are you aged 16-24 and in receipt of universal credit, or do you know someone who is? Do you have a background in farming with livestock or have you been to agricultural college? Are you a team-player and a problem-solver with solid organisational skills? Would you like to help make South Ormsby Estate the best farming estate in the world?

We’re looking for a Kickstart Agricultural Assistant to help care for our herd of 450 original-breed Lincoln Red cattle. The role includes farm maintenance, feeding and watering, helping with milking, assisting during veterinary visits and clear, accurate record-keeping.

There is a possibility of shared local accommodation for the right candidate. To enquire further and for a full job description, contact your local job coach at Jobcentre Plus.
