Free Range Turkeys for Christmas in Lincolnshire

This year is the first year that South Ormsby Estate is producing free-range Turkeys for Christmas. We are located in the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds near Louth in Lincolnshire. Our traditional rare breed free-range Christmas Turkeys will soon be available to pre-order. If you live in Louth or the surrounding area you will be able to pick up your fresh free-range turkey from the estate the week before Christmas.

There are many benefits to buying a free-range slow-grown turkey, it is tastier and more succulent than commercially produced turkeys. The turkeys have been living out in the pasture during the day and have been fed a high protein organic fed and will have experienced a high level of care during their time with us.

We purchased day-old turkey poults (baby turkeys) from Rutland Organics.  Rutland Organics sell heritage rare breed turkeys which are suited to being outside on pasture.  The chicks were reared in the stables under brooder lamps, then transferred to Manor Farm. They are a mixture of Norfolk Black and Bronze rare breed turkeys.  We will be keeping some of the Norfolk Black Hens and Stags to form the basis of our breeding flock.

Heritage Breed Turkeys

All heritage breeds of turkey are rare breeds, here at South Ormsby Estate we are passionate about keeping and breeding Rare Breeds to increase the numbers of these animals. We also have our herd of Lincoln Red Cattle and our flock of Lincolnshire Buff chickens. Heritage breed animals tend to take longer to fatten up than commercial breeds, which is why they cost more than commercially reared meats. By purchasing rare breed meat you are also supporting the breeding and are helping to conserve these rare breeds. You are also paying for meat with a high level of animal welfare.

The Norfolk Black is the UK’s oldest breed of turkey. The breed is also known as Black Spanish as it may have been brought to Europe from the Americas by conquistadors in the 16th century.

The young turkeys went out on the pasture in August, they are free-range on the pasture during the day and come in at night. The pasture the turkeys are on is in going through organic conversion, by the end of 2022, the pasture will be certified organic.  The turkeys are fed a high protein organic feed from High Peak, as well as eating what they find when they are in the grass paddocks.  Although the turkeys are from an organic breeder and have only been fed organic feed, we can’t say they are organic as the estate is still going through organic conversion.  The turkeys are reared to the same high welfare standards as the Organic Farmers and Growers Association guidance, which means they are in a small flock, are able to participate in natural behaviours, and spend most of their life outdoors in the grass paddocks. Find out more about how the estate is going organic.

Free Range Turkeys Near Louth

Turkeys don’t deal with stress well and they can actually die if they become too stressed. Transporting them even a short distance can cause them stress and the stress hormone adrenaline can affect the meat, so the turkeys are on the pasture near Manor Farm, which is also where they will be slaughtered and processed, reducing any stress from transporting them.

The turkeys will be slaughtered at the beginning of December and hung for 2 weeks, which allows the flavour to develop in the meat.  We will be producing fresh whole free-range Turkeys for local collection the week before Christmas, which means you can remove the legs and freeze them for use after Christmas.

If you are wanting a small turkey it is advisable to order as soon as possible, as we do have more larger birds than smaller hens. We will also have Lincolnshire Buff chickens to pre-order for Christmas if you prefer chicken.

Don’t miss out, pre-order your Christmas Turkey and Chicken today.
