A Week on the Estate: Kickstart Tour, Turkey Whisperers & Bumper Spuds

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

Autumn is making its presence felt. The nights are drawing in and the leaves are beginning to turn. Despite this, the weather remains as unpredictable as ever, with last week’s wind, rain and gloom displaced by high pressure, blue skies and a predicted temperature range of 6C to 19C over the next week.

As we round off the harvest season, the Rev. Teresa appreciated Jan’s and Jacqui’s decorative skills at last weekend’s Harvest Festival at St. Leonard’s Church. Their window displays made great use of wholesome food harvested right here on South Ormsby Estate and in the village’s community plots. Thanks to all who helped us to brighten up this lovely old church and celebrate a bountiful harvest.

Close to home, the Saturday Club are well on their way to being turkey whisperers. Charlie Winship taught the team how to safely catch, hold, handle and release a turkey with minimal fuss all round. They also learned how to tag and weigh our handsome, heritage-breed Norfolk Blacks.

Just when we think we’ve got on top of the harvest, along comes our garden-guru Colin to present us with a bumper crop of Cara potatoes. We’re contemplating what we should do with the Walled Garden’s abundance of spuds. Suggestions welcome!

Are you a hard-working 16-24-year-old with a willingness to learn – or do you know someone who is? We’re on the lookout for our next set of Kickstarters and on Tuesday 26th October we’ll be hosting a very special open day.

The open day will begin with free refreshments at The Old School Tea & Coffee Shop then we’ll show our guests around the beautiful rural estate of which we’re so proud (bring boots or wellies!). They’ll meet our current Kickstarters, hear their stories, experience their day-to-day work and ask as many questions as they’d like.

Head to our 8th October Facebook post HERE to register your interest or find out more. Click HERE to hear our current Kickstarters share their South Ormsby experience in their own words. From estate management to marketing, from distilling gin to milking cattle, there’s a world of opportunity waiting for the right candidates at the 3,000-acre commercial hub that is South Ormsby Estate.
