A Week on the Estate: Get Hedging, Going Organic & Green Future

This is an important year for South Ormsby Estate as we’re in-conversion to organic status. By the end of 2022, our beef, poultry and arable produce will be officially organic. We aim to keep you fully apprised as we work towards this significant milestone on our journey.

We take our responsibilities as sustainable farmers very seriously. We’re proud to be accredited by the Pasture for Life Association and we embrace the principles of regenerative agriculture. Generations of farmers have learned the hard way that exploiting the soil biome to the point where it breaks down can lead to crop failure, erosion, flooding and worse. Our approach to land husbandry includes minimising soil disturbance, covering the soil, preserving living roots and diversifying crops.

We also embrace mob-grazing courtesy of our Lincoln Red herd. Our rare and native-breed cattle leave behind plenty of natural fertiliser and their cropping encourages tillering, the process by which plants generate multiple new shoots.

Speaking of improving the land, the year is young but we’re already busy – we’ve planted 200m of new boundary hedge so far this month. We’re investing time, money and elbow grease to replace fencing with hedgerows that will serve as wildlife corridors, both hosting and spreading biodiversity. Another 1.1km will follow this year, adding to more than 5km planted since 2019.

Modern agriculture took its toll on hedgerows. According to Estate records, we had 170 fields in 1888 and 96 by 2018. We’ve been working hard to reverse the trend towards intensification by growing and rearing food in a way that positively benefits the natural environment. The January weather may be gloomy but the future’s looking brighter for our lovely corner of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Elsewhere on the Estate, skilled trades have been hard at work. Scaffolding is up inside St Leonard’s Church and Dan and Connor have been sprucing up the walls with a new layer of render. Off Brinkhill Road, Johnson & Smith of Lincoln have started restoring the Lincoln Red Lookout, ultimately giving this time-worn structure a new lease of life as a holiday let.

Finally, our roving photographer Damian Furlong captured a lovely study of a welcome Estate guest – a young buzzard in his prime, showing his best profile on his plucking post near the North Drive.
