A Week on the Estate: Great Gardening, Richard’s Herd & Woodland Gin

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

It may have felt a bit autumnal for many of us last weekend but summer is here, the weather is warming up, the Platinum Jubilee is behind us and there’s plenty of work to be done. The Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival was a very busy time for the whole Estate team, and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting to our customers and showing them what we’ve achieved.

The Estate team enjoyed a well-earned night out to celebrate a successful festival. Claythorpe Watermill certainly lives up to its billing as one of Lincolnshire’s loveliest surprises and we heartily recommend it for food, drink and good company.

Speaking of hard work, there’s been plenty going on out on the land and in the Walled Garden. Like any veteran gardener worth his salt, Colin knows that delegation is the key to success. The Saturday Club have cleared the beds in Miss Anne’s garden, while Clint and Abbie have built a cucumber house. Colin did get hands-on with George and Clint to make sure the fountain in Miss Anne’s garden was ready for its grand switch-on.

Nearby, this year’s first Lincolnshire Buff poults left their brooder behind and turned out onto our lovely, biodiverse pastures. It’s a big, wide world in the Hall’s grounds and they’ll soon learn to love it.  Given the restrictions imposed by avian flu last winter, it’s been life-affirming to see both our Lincolnshire Buff chickens and Norfolk Black turkeys returning to outdoor foraging.

Speaking of rare and native breeds, regular readers will know that our herd of Lincoln Red cattle is the keystone of our approach to regenerative agriculture. We interviewed our new Herd Manager Richard Lakin, a lifelong cattleman with all sorts of practical insights and entertaining stories to share. Finally, one of our most popular and most exclusive gins is back. Massingberd-Mundy Master Distiller Tristan Jørgensen has distilled the heart and soul of our beautiful woodlands into a very special oak-aged gin in a strictly limited edition of 100 bottles.

Tristan has taken his award-winning Burrell’s Dry and aged it in windfallen oak grown over generations at South Ormsby Estate and crafted into barrels by our friends at Ketsby Sawmill. Steeped in oak chips and the finest Tahitian vanilla, this gin will surprise and delight gin aficionados.

For a virtual sip, here are Tristan’s tasting notes: “On the nose, you get lots of vanilla and toast…with underlying citrus and juniper. Your palate is greeted with warming toast, honey and vanilla, with a rich and creamy texture. The finish is long and luxurious…the toasted oak and vanilla just keep on giving.”

Click HERE to secure your very special artisan gin at the same price as our regular Burrell’s Dry.
