A Week on the Estate: Hedge Laying, Moat Clearing & Produce Galore

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

It’s hard to believe we’re already half-way through autumn. The nights are drawing in, there’s a crisp chill in the air, the trees are decked with golden leaves and the clocks go back in a fortnight.

Out on the land, it’s National Hedgerow Week. Thomas helped expert hedge-layer Matthew Davey and his team hand-lay 150m of new hedgerow over at Harden’s Gap. A little autumn rain didn’t dampen the team’s spirits as they tackled this important job. Estate records show 170 fields in 1888 and 96 in 2018, a pattern consistent with post-war farming practices. We’ve been working hard to reverse this trend and do better for nature.

We’re progressively replacing fencing with hedgerows that will act as wildlife corridors, both hosting and spreading biodiversity. According to Hedgelink, not only do our hedgerows protect against pollution and absorb carbon, but they also host 80% of our woodland birds, hedgehogs, dormice, butterflies and most bat species. Since 2019, we’ve planted 6km and we’re still going strong.

Keeping watercourses efficient and unobstructed is a vital aspect of estate management. The Saturday Club helped Hall Steward Clint remove the season’s first deadfall from the moat. It was a useful job done well and all earned their lunch. To find out more about maintaining a rural estate day-to-day, you can catch up with Clint’s blog HERE.

Next time you uncork one of our award-winning, small-batch Massingberd-Mundy gins, be sure to raise a glass to our hard-working Saturday Club. Besides clearing watercourses, the team recently picked 7.2kg of sloe berries that will soon find their way into Tristan’s distillery. Our hedgerows brim with all sorts of life, including this useful fruit of the spiny blackthorn tree which appears to have thrived in this year’s feisty weather.

Speaking of all things gin, the Massingberd-Mundy Distillery is in the running again! Thanks to all the lovely gin aficionados who nominated our fine gins in the ‘Drinks Product of the Year’ category for Lincolnshire Life Magazine’s ‘Taste of Excellence’ Food & Drink Awards 2022.

Burrell’s Dry Gin placed first in last year’s competition. In 2021, this small-batch, craft gin went toe-to-toe with a dozen well-known and respected brands including Batemans Ales, Pin Gin and Stokes Tea & Coffee and came out on top. Fingers crossed for more exciting news in November.

gin, beef & soap

On the subject of fine, Massingberd-Mundy produce, our grass-fed, ethically farmed, flavourfully succulent Lincoln Red beef is back! You can grace your family’s dinner table with some of the best beef you’ll ever taste for a new and highly competitive price.

We’ve worked hard to minimise our production costs and pass on the savings to our valued customers. We’ve also kept our food miles low by ensuring that our cattle are slaughtered within 10 miles of their pastures, and by handling and storing the meat right here at South Ormsby Estate.

Our rare-breed, pedigree Lincoln Red herd is 100% grass-fed all-year round, accredited by the Pasture for Life Association and will be fully organic from 2023. You can peruse our range of beef HERE and read the full story of our herd HERE.

Finally, we’re about to launch another delightful surprise fresh from our pastures. Our brand new Massingberd-Mundy milk soap will bring a touch of creamy luxury to your cleansing routine. Each of our three varieties has been painstakingly crafted from Lincoln Red milk and the botanical fragrances and textures that inspire us.

This all-natural, rigorously tested milk soap is available in three tempting varieties: Mary’s Natural Moisturising Milk Soap, Louisa’s Purifying Four Thieves Milk Soap and Anne’s Exfoliating Oat & Honey Milk Soap. Intrigued? You can find out more HERE.
