A Week on the Estate: Packed Weekend, Tall Tales & Team Gardening

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

May is almost upon us and the weather is set to warm up in time for the bank holiday weekend. The next seven days look set to be fine and dry if mostly overcast, with highs of 18C and lows of 5C. If you’re thinking ahead to the Coronation of King Charles III on 6th May, the long-range forecast indicates a warm, showery day with a chance of thunderstorms (of course!).

Spring is always a busy time around the Estate, especially so this year as we prepare for the Estate Open Weekend on 20th and 21st May. The list of activities, talks and entertainment seems be growing day-by-day and we’ll be seriously impressed if anybody fits it all in. Click HERE for the latest Open Weekend news and don’t forget to book your entry ticket and your lunch. Don’t forget, Friends of South Ormsby Estate can attend all events for free.

Tall Tree Tales’ is just one of the recent additions to the Open Weekend itinerary. Rodger from Lincs Wolds Countryside Service will be guiding a 3.75-mile walk around South Ormsby Estate with a focus on the magic of trees. You’ll see our woodland wonders through the eyes of storytellers and myth-makers and come away enchanted and informed. Booking isn’t required, but this one-off walk will depart the Lincs Wolds AONB stand promptly at 11am on Saturday 20th May.

If you’ve enjoyed our story and you’d like to get more deeply involved with what we do, we’re looking for volunteers to help the Open Weekend go with a swing. We need event marshals plus parking and ticket stewards, all able and willing to meet, greet and guide our guests on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May.

To thank you for generously volunteering, we’ll reward you with an exclusive treat that money can’t buy: a behind-the-scenes peek inside South Ormsby Hall with one of our experienced guides, on a date TBC after the Open Weekend. We’ll also keep you fed and refreshed during the Open Weekend, with free drinks and your choice of meals and snacks from Mark’s menu, which includes beef, turkey or veggie chili, slow-cooked pulled beef and fresh berries.

Last autumn, we put out a call for volunteers to help with a real-life cattle drive and we were thrilled by the enthusiastic response. This is the beginning of a fine, new tradition and we’re blessed to have so many keen volunteers on our doorstep.

We’re also seeking short-term and ad hoc employees to serve as Kitchen Assistants and Tour Guides for the May Open Weekend and potentially for future events.

Kitchen Assistants will bring cheerful service and fine Lincolnshire produce to our valued guests. They’ll work with a friendly and supportive team, chatting to customers, assembling and serving simple dishes and keeping the dining area spick and span. There is scope for further catering work at the Old School on various dates throughout the Lincs Wolds Outdoor Festival. They’ll be employed on a casual, ad hoc basis for £11.42 per hour.

Tour Guides will bring a personable nature, a knack for speaking engagingly to the public, some knowledge of our wild flora and fauna and the ability to master a brief quickly. They’ll be employed for a short, fixed period at £12 per hour, and more guiding may be available in future for the right candidates.

If you’re interested in any of these voluntary or employed roles, email Kathryn here: kathryn.taylor@southormsbyestate.co.uk.

Finally, the young workers of the Saturday Club are learning to roll with the seasons and grow their own. Having put their heads together to divide up their allotment and decide which food and flowers to plant, they got started with sewing seeds and watering in.

A sensibly diverse range of crops were planted, including normal, purple and Chantennay carrots, green beans, peas, radishes and beetroot (which apparently Layla is going to eat single-handedly as she loves it!). The team even found time to weed the courtyard by hand. Watch this space to see how the Saturday Club allotment fares.

Enjoy your long weekend and we’ll see you out there.
