Getting Outdoors & Meeting People: a Catch-up with Vanessa
We’re enjoying a spell of warm, dry spring weather and there’s no better time to head out and explore the wonderful Lincolnshire Wolds. To see South Ormsby Estate in its spring finery, why not join one or more of the 60 guided walks we’re running as part of the Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival? Click HERE to browse and book.
If you’d like to get to know our lovely countryside a little better, the South Ormsby Conservation Club meets on the first Wednesday and third Friday of every month. Aimed squarely at adults, the Conservation Club next meets on Friday 17th May. Here’s one of our volunteers, Vanesse Heatherley, to tell you more.
“I was born in Nottingham and grew up in Leicestershire,” said Vanessa. “In 2021, we moved to the Lincolnshire Wolds. We’d both retired and we wanted a bit more space. Our house was built in the 1970s but hasn’t been updated since then. We’ve had to sort out the insulation, the windows and the kitchen so far. It seems like you start one job and it creates a thousand more. You do learn as you go and it’s cheaper when you can do a job for yourself.
“We’ve got half an acre and there’s plenty of garden to enjoy. We’ve got a couple of old chickens. They’re not laying anymore and are just enjoying life. We’re not super-serious about gardening but I do really enjoy it. We’ve got a greenhouse and we’re keen on growing tomatoes and sunflowers.
“Last year, I did a few walks around South Ormsby Estate and signed up to their newsletter. I got an email about volunteering and I signed up. I enjoy the outdoors and I thought it would be interesting to see what went on. I’ve been involved since last September and I’m learning as I go along.
