A Week on the Estate: Spring Arrives, Inspirational Women & Bird Tours
Spring is here and we’re thoroughly enjoying it. Meteorological spring begins on 1st March and always runs with the calendar quarters, whereas astronomical spring begins with the vernal equinox, which this year falls on 20th March. We prefer the earlier start, as does all the budding plant life and vibrant wildlife that makes life in our corner of the Lincolnshire Wolds such a joy. It certainly feels springlike right now, with a temperature range of 17C-3C forecast for this weekend, although we can expect a drop to a more seasonal 7C-2C by the middle of next week.
Tomorrow, Saturday 8th March, is International Women’s Day, a day devoted to celebrating women’s achievements and promoting equality of opportunity. Originally inspired by the universal female suffrage movement of the early 20th century, this day was first marked in 1911 and was made a global holiday by the UN in 1977.
We’re marking International Women’s Day by celebrating the achievements of the women who are helping to make ours a farming estate where business, the environment and local people can thrive together. We chatted with a few of our inspirational women to find out more.
“What I enjoy most about working at South Ormsby Estate is that my role directly contributes to benefiting both nature and the local community,” said Marie Marriott, Events & Marketing Manager. “It’s such a beautiful and inspiring place to work, and I’m lucky to be part of such a lovely team. With so many exciting projects on the horizon, I’ve had the opportunity to expand my events and marketing skill set, especially in areas like digital marketing and collaborating with local businesses. The variety of projects keeps me engaged and constantly learning, which has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
“In my own time, I love playing cricket for my local women’s team, though I’m currently resting due to a head injury. Outside of cricket, I enjoy being outdoors with activities like horse riding and walking, which give me the chance to connect with nature. Spending quality time with family and friends is also very important to me, as it helps me recharge and stay grounded.
“I’ve had a couple of adventurous experiences that might surprise people. I’ve abseiled down Grimsby Dock Tower and skydived in New Zealand. Both were incredible experiences that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I still remember the adrenaline rush and sense of accomplishment from each!”
