A Week on the Estate: Beef Week, Buffs Foraging & Busman’s Holiday

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

We’re five weeks from meteorological summer, life is bursting forth wherever we look and we’ve enjoyed plenty of warm, blue-sky days. Despite appearances, however, the weather is set to remain variable and potentially chilly into May. Over the next week, we’ll get brisk winds from all points of the compass, scattered showers and a temperature range of 12C to 1C.

At the Hall, the Saturday Club have had a busy couple of weeks. Bradley was crowned winner of the photography competition with his image of Honey the Hall Cat peeping from a tree, and he kindly shared his prize of an Easter egg with the group. Later that weekend, the gang came together for a team photo. The process very much resembled herding cats until an actual cat, Marmite, took charge.

The team also got plenty of work done. With the help of Clint and Kitty, fresh allotment plots were weeded, raked and divided up, decisions were taken on what to grow and laburnum trees were planted. Log-stacking was required at the Old Rectory and the gang litter-picked there and back to make efficient use of their travel time.

Mandatory housing measures to manage the risk of avian flu were lifted on 18th April and the Lincolnshire Buff flock emerged into the Walled Garden ready to make the most of the fine spring weather. Freedom and fresh grass tasted pretty sweet to our chooks after a long winter indoors.

Thinking about gracing your garden with chickens? Fancy your own supply of fresh eggs? We may have a tempting option for you. We’re selling rare, native-breed Lincolnshire Buff chickens in pairs (two hens) or trios (two hens and a cockerel). Click HERE to find out more.

St George’s Day (Sunday 23rd April) marks the start of Great British Beef Week and we’re proud to stand with all the British farmers working their wellies off to produce some of the world’s most sustainable beef.

The Massingberd-Mundy beef herd is officially organic and accredited by the Pasture for Life Association. Our rare, native-breed Lincoln Reds graze only pasture and forage crops grown on our land, and for the most part live outdoors, all-year-round. We employ a rotational grazing system akin to natural mob-grazing, which ensures a high standard of natural nutrition for the cattle and a regenerative boost for our wild fauna and flora.

If you’re in our neck of the woods and you’d like to try some of the best beef money can buy with the highest welfare standards and minimal food miles, our very own Mark Vines runs fortnightly click & collect sessions, with the next scheduled for Saturday 29th April.

Speaking of Mark and tasty grub, you’re bound to work up an appetite at our Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival Open Weekend (20th & 21st May). Mark Vines and the team have got you covered. The Massingberd-Mundy food van will be on hand with tasty, filling produce grown and reared right here on the Estate to official organic standards. To ensure freshness and minimise waste, pre-booking your tasty vittles is essential. Order HERE and choose from beef, turkey or veggie chili, slow-cooked pulled beef, fresh berries and hot beverages.

Finally – and just in case you missed it – we’re looking for an extraordinary individual or couple to spend several weeks every year enjoying the historic grandeur and natural beauty of South Ormsby Hall, its Walled Garden and its parklands. Could this be you?

You’ll provide holiday relief for Hall Steward Clint Coughlan. You’ll receive competitive pay and on-site accommodation, and you’ll get acquainted with our wild flora and fauna, our bee-hives, our Lincolnshire Buff chickens, our hard-working estate team and a grand,  18th-century country house. In exchange, you’ll keep up a light maintenance and gardening schedule and keep an eye on the Hall and grounds.

If you’re handy, green-fingered and can picture yourself in a tranquil setting with only bees and birds for company, this could be the busman’s holiday you’ve been waiting for. To find out more, email Kathryn: kathryn.taylor@southormsbyestate.co.uk. To find out why Clint loves his job so much, click HERE.
