A Week on the Estate: Double Trouble, Pottering About & Tiny Tunnellers

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

It’s been a feisty week out there as a prolonged and energetic Atlantic hurricane season continues to make its presence felt. Midweek, we experienced heavy cloudbursts and strong winds as Hurricane Lee rushed in before Hurricane Nigel had left the stage. The week to come will remain blustery and autumnal with temperatures in the 20C-11C range.

Thanks to Oxcombe Pottery for giving our staff a fab day out. The fun, introductory throwing workshop took some (but not all!) of the team from zero to hero in hours. Some made useful crockery while others just made spectacles of themselves. Either way, everyone had fun and learned a bit of craftsmanship.

Oxcombe Pottery has been a well-regarded Lincolnshire Wolds hub for pottery and fine art since 2014. Its studio and barn conversions lie at the heart of a historic working farmstead, surrounded by mature trees, rolling pastures and handsome architecture. If you fancy getting some clay under your fingernails and leaving your everyday worries at the far end of a farm track, you can find out more HERE.

Around South Ormsby Estate, ‘build it and they will come’ is our motto where biodiversity is concerned. The electric blue flash of a hunting kingfisher around the beck and the Lake is always thrilling and we’d like to see more of these agile anglers. Deepening, restoring and improving the Lake will greatly improve biodiversity, but we’re leaving nothing to chance.

Kingfisher tunnels are being laid and buried at various points around the beck and the Lake. These des-res family homes will hopefully attract new birds and allow them to devote more energy to breeding and feeding and less to excavating. It can take a male kingfisher a fortnight to excavate a 1m nesting tunnel. For a 40g bird with a two-year lifespan, that’s a hefty investment of time and energy. Keep watching this space for lots of positive kingfisher news in seasons to come.

In other news, we’re thrilled that the Massingberd-Mundy Distillery has been nominated for the third year running in the ‘Drinks Product of the Year’ category of Lincolnshire Life Magazine’s Taste of Excellence Food & Drink Awards. Burrell’s Dry Gin won in 2021 and earned a Gold Citation in 2022.

Here’s Tristan: “Super proud that despite me leaving for pastures new, Massingberd-Mundy Distillery is still proving popular amongst their loyal fans. Thank you to everyone who voted for South Ormsby Estate, home of Massingberd-Mundy Burrell’s Dry Gin & Marie Jeanne’s Pink Gin.”

The last batch of Tristan’s classics are available HERE while stocks last. Big thanks as ever to Tristan Jørgensen.

Finally, if you’ve yet to try our hand-made Lincoln Red Milk Soap, now is the time! You can try all three varieties in one pack for only £6.95 (reduced from £13.95). Massingberd-Mundy Milk Soap is made with Lincoln Red milk taken only when our calves have drunk their fill. The smooth, natural creaminess and gentle fragrance of our soaps come straight from our pastures, fields and Walled Garden.

Each bar is mixed, cured, cut and stamped by hand right here on the Estate. Unlike mass-produced soaps with three-year shelf lives, we don’t use any preservatives. For £6.95, you’ll get:
