A Week on the Estate: Harvest Underway, Hungry Yaffle & Bargains Aplenty
As we head into the second week of August with the harvest well underway, low pressure continues to dominate our weather. The week to come will be very much like the week behind, with scattered showers, a feisty breeze and temperatures in the 20C-10C range. That said, the barometer looks set to rise towards the weekend after next, with temperatures back in the mid-high twenties.
Speaking of the harvest, this week we were proud to support 24 Hours in Farming, an online event showcasing the hard work and care that goes into feeding the nation. Out on our arable fields, it was suitably busy. The rain took a day off, allowing Richard and the team to cut one of our winter oilseed rape fields. Nearby, Richard and Simon finished harvesting the winter barley, while hot on their heels John and Stuart called in to get the straw baled ahead of the next band of rainfall.
No two growing seasons are alike, with substantial swings in heat and moisture keeping us on our toes. Despite a dry, hot June, this season is looking like a belter for all sorts of produce, including soft fruit in the Walled Garden. Jacqui Rhodes made the best of this, creating a raspberry Bakewell cake that tasted every bit as good as it looked.
Another crop doing very well is the 12,600 grape vines we planted back in May. The vines are spaced with a view to hand-picking. Each summer, we do a spot of leaf-stripping to allow the air to circulate and expose the stems to sunlight. This is a good way to slow down Botrytis, a fungus responsible for grape-rot.
