A Week on the Estate: Heat Wave, Hard Work & On Your Bike

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

We’re coming to the end of a week of hot, humid weather and are looking forward to cooler temperatures with a useful bit of rainfall. Central and southern parts of the UK are bearing the brunt of the hot spell and are about to exchange amber heat warnings for yellow flood alerts.

Our young workers cracked on with their work despite some oppressive heat. Last weekend, the Saturday Club cleared an impressive mass of ragwort and took a few close-up pics of bumblebees and ringlet butterflies before retreating to the shade for a well-earned rest. Elsewhere, Kickstarter Bradley McPherson got stuck into some intense weeding in the cheesery garden.

Damian Furlong has spent a fair bit of time outdoors lately. Last weekend, he led a somewhat warm photography walk. Finding a route through shady trees helped morale, as did the promise of flapjacks, tea and coffee at The Old School Tea & Coffee Shop. Sticky weather aside, the three-mile walk through our lovely countryside did not disappoint. The team bagged great shots of butterflies and red kites on the wing and got up close with meadow flowers.

They also found slightly larger fauna in the shape of our Lincoln Red herd at Keal Yard. One of our bulls proved particularly photogenic and clearly fancies himself a supermodel. We should point out that this bull is known to have a calm temperament, and our budding photographers were supervised by experienced herd staff. As a general rule, we recommend keeping a respectful distance from any kind of livestock. Keep an eye on our social media for more free photography walks with Damian.

With the summer weather about to simmer down a little, it’s a perfect time to see the Lincolnshire Wolds in their high-summer glory by exploring our walking trails. We’ve been busy mowing footpaths and the team from Ketsby Sawmill have installed a new kissing gate at Driby, so walkers won’t even have to hack through grass or tiptoe over a cattle grid. To seal the deal, The Old School Tea & Coffee Shop now offers complimentary Lincoln Red hot-beef rolls in addition to fine tea and coffee and sweet treats.

Finally, for those who prefer two wheels to two feet, here’s a trip out with a difference. At 2pm on Wednesday 28th July, Estate Photographer Damian Furlong will be guiding guests along the easy 7.5-mile (12km) Ted’s Trail. They’ll see the splendour of South Ormsby Estate, then ride along Bluestone Heath Road to the panoramic top of the Lincolnshire Wolds before descending to the handsome village of Tetford. There’ll be plenty of photo opportunities en route and free drinks and snacks can be pre-ordered from The Old School Tea & Coffee Shop as a well-earned reward.

Booking is not required. Bring yourself, your bicycle and your camera (optional!) to the Ormsby Ring layby for 2pm on 28th July. You can pre-book your snacks HERE and take a look at Ted’s Trail and other cycle routes HERE.
