A Week on the Estate: Tractor Trail, Lookout Progress & Naming Cheese

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

The summer solstice is behind us, the land is resplendent in its summer finery and we’re hard at work preparing for the harvest season and converting to organic status. The weather’s been pleasantly warm but stubbornly dry and we’d welcome a drop or two of rain.

The Belchford Tractor Trail flew the flag for our rural heritage last Sunday. A magnificent array of tractors (and drivers) of all ages, shapes and sizes enjoyed a summer jaunt around the lovely Lincolnshire Wolds.

The Tractor Trail made a flying visit to South Ormsby Hall via the South Drive then headed for Ormsby Ring and beyond. There were enough of these wonderful old machines to fill out a panoramic photo. Thanks to all involved for calling in and we’ll see you all again.

On Brinkhill Road, a pleasing amount of progress has been made on the Lincoln Red Lookout since January. The external structure has been sympathetically rebuilt and now the interior is being fitted out. The building will soon benefit from modern amenities and efficiency measures and looks well set for more generations of useful life.

Over on our Facebook page, it’s competition time. We’re looking to our country-wise readers to coin a suitable name for South Ormsby Estate’s very first cheese made from Lincoln Red milk. The winning suggestion will grace our cheese when it goes on sale in spring 2023. The creative cheese-lover responsible will also get a tour of the Massingberd-Mundy Creamery with veteran chef Mark Vines, including an exclusive tasting session and a round of our very first cheese to take home.

If you’d like to join in, here are some tips:

– Head to Facebook and comment beneath the relevant post. This week’s post is all about ideas; the more, the merrier. You’ll have until midnight on Friday 15th July to comment. After that, Mark will pick his favourite two names and we’ll have a run-off.

– Mark’s new cheese is in the Alpine Tomme style and is a farmhouse cheese (not a cheddar).

– We’re looking for a name that evokes our Lincolnshire Wolds heritage and our future. We’re using milk from native-breed Lincoln Reds grazed on lush, biodiverse pastures. We embrace regenerative agriculture and we’re in-conversion to organic status.

– Historically minded? South Ormsby Estate was founded in 1638 by Sir Drayner Massingberd who fought in the English Civil War for the Parliamentarian cause; Oliver Cromwell’s portrait hangs in South Ormsby Hall. Samuel Wesley, father of the founders of Methodism, was rector of South Ormsby in the 1690s. Custodians of the Hall have included Marie Jeanne Rapigeon, Charles Burrell Massingberd and Adrian Massingberd-Mundy.
