More calves join us as some snow begins to fall

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

John Crutchley and his team are still busy calving. The current total number of new Lincoln Red babies is 34. All are doing well, although John has had to assist with some breech births and also had to hand feed a couple of calves to ensure they are getting sufficient milk. It is often said that the snowy, cold weather brings on the births and maybe this is the reason that the first calves arrived sooner than expected.

The windy weather has taken its toll yet again across the Estate and brought down some more trees. This one is in Limetree walk and was clearly in need of sorting out. Local tree surgeon, Andy Hackett and his team, are about to address the avenue anyway so this is one less tree for them to sort and they can tidy it away along with the other branches and trunks that are pruned.

They have also been busy up at the nearly completed Rectory and are going to tackle the big diseased horse chestnut on the south lawn. We have to be careful here as we once had to get a local farmer to tow a lorry out when it had sunk into the soft grass. Indeed the muddy areas at the rectory have had to have chalk put down in order to prevent lorries and vans from getting stuck up there

The recent warmer weather and sunshine has encouraged the aconites and snowdrops which look stunning across the estate and it is strange to think that this time last year we were snowed in and staff were snowed out! The huge circle of flowers under the copper beech at the Rectory makes a stunning sight and leads on to arguably one of the best views in the Wolds.

Ian at Gordon’s garage has been sharing with us some of the old memorabilia his father used when he had a garage. Among the artifacts Ian has are old tools, old car manuals and old containers. Whilst these definitely have a vintage look many are still useful to Ian and his team and he uses some of them on a daily basis. His Haynes manuals are actually stored in his parents’ 1950’s retro Kitchen cabinet complete with pull down breadboard! He does, of course, have all the necessary modern equipment too. He is hoping to bring over his old 1953 Vanguard car soon which he will be stripping down and restoring with help from son, Tom and apprentice, Jay.
