Rural AI & Our Digital Future: a Chat with Sabrina

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

We’re working hard to make South Ormsby Estate the beating heart of an entrepreneurial rural economy where business, the natural environment and local people can thrive together. In the 21st century, that means creating a variety of fulfilling careers, including the kind of high-quality, high-tech jobs that will help talented people to find fulfilling careers without leaving the place they call home. We also want to empower our whole community to make the best of technological change.

With that in mind, we’d like to introduce our readers to Sabrina Kelly, Manager of the Praetorium – our new Rural AI & Digital Skills Centre here at South Ormsby Estate. Sabrina would love you to join her for an Open Day to see the exciting redevelopment of the Praetorium and to hear about the plans for AI and digital programmes starting soon. Click HERE to sign up and READ ON for a chat with Sabrina about embracing AI, moving to the Wolds, the joy of Lego and more.

“Our Open Days at the Praetorium will be a great way to engage with people and hear what they want,” said Sabrina. “We want to tailor what we do to what our community needs. Ultimately, the plan is to be a useful resource and to create opportunities right here in Lincolnshire. They call me ‘the AI lady’ but I’m not an AI expert and I’m not here to teach a digital course. I want to meet you in person. Whether you’re a budding young entrepreneur, a local business, a teacher, an employee looking to boost your skills, a student preparing for further education or just someone who’s curious about AI, I’d love to hear from you.

“I’m managing the Praetorium, our new Rural AI & Digital Skills Centre here at South Ormsby Estate. We’ve given it that title because we want the Estate to be a rural counterpart to urban AI centres in London and elsewhere. AI and the digital skills needed to use it can be developed and located in the countryside; they don’t need to be tied to big cities. While many young people feel they have to move to technology hubs like London, Cambridge, Manchester, Oxford or Glasgow to build their careers, we believe they should have the opportunity to stay, grow and thrive in their own community.

“We’re not being too prescriptive about the Rural AI & Digital Skills Centre at the moment. We want anyone in our community with questions about rural AI to join us for a chat and a coffee. Whether your interest is in using AI as a business opportunity, or you’re generally interested in making yourself more AI-literate, we’d love to see you. The Estate aims to boost rural entrepreneurship and we’d like to host businesses that use AI for the benefit of our community. We’d also like to give local people the tools to use AI safely and positively in their everyday lives.

“I’ve just moved to Lincolnshire with my family and we’re really enjoying it. I’m still shaking off the holiday feeling of waking up to amazing sunrises in the fields. I grew up in the north of Germany, on a small island near Denmark. In 2012, I was seconded to the UK by my company; my project was interesting and got extended so I chose to stay. My background is in software engineering and I’ve worked for big organisations like IBM doing coding. Consulting is where I’m most at home and I’ve worked for companies like BAe and Applied Intelligence on digital integration programmes, helping staff to adjust to change.

“I know a lot about project management and business operations but I wanted to pick up more business acumen. I did business coaching then an MBA at Cranfield University to upskill and learn more general management. I stayed there and got a job working on business growth. I met Jon Thornes at Cranfield where he was acting as a business mentor. During the Covid era, we set up a business response unit, offering webinars and workshops where businesses could figure things out together. From there, I went on to help small and medium enterprises to overcome challenges to their growth. I also consulted on digital transformation and leadership development.

“I’m not an AI expert but I am an expert in setting things up. I never imagined I’d be moving to somewhere like the Lincolnshire Wolds and it’s come at a busy time in my life. Among other things, I’m very active in the Lego community! I’m currently involved in setting up a Lego museum in Milton Keynes, I’m organising the UK’s longest-running brick show in Swindon and I’m the chair of the UK’s largest Lego user group. I built Lego towers as a child but, sadly, I gave my Lego away when I moved to the UK. Happily, my husband and his son had a big Lego collection and we’ve added to it. At events, nothing generates conversations like classic Lego town sets from the 1970s and 1980s. Mums and dads had them as kids and grandparents have them in the loft. As well as sharing memories, we also see kids getting enthusiastic about Lego. Having kinetic or interactive Lego really attracts the little ones.

“There is a fair bit of bad news about AI out there but ultimately any novel technology can be used in a negative way and it’s up to individuals to learn how to use it effectively and positively. An AI search, for example, isn’t as straightforward as a conventional Google search; users of AI need to know how it works and how and when to challenge its results.

“We’ll all have to learn to be more supple with IT in the near future. We want to help local people to use AI positively, whether it’s for personal use or to forge a thriving business right here in the wonderful Lincolnshire Wolds. AI could develop and change the world very quickly. We can’t change that but we can equip our community to stay safe, make good decisions and create fulfilling careers.

“I look forward to saying hello to you at the Praetorium. Come along and please bring lots of questions!”
