Celebrating the Fifth Quarter
- Massingberd-Mundy leather goods are made using leather from our own herd of Lincoln Red Cattle.
- Our herd is original population, pasture-raised, and managed using sustainable practices, and we take great pride in them. As such, our goal is to demonstrate how highly we value each aspect of what we produce from our herd.
- Our delicious Lincoln Red Beef has been a staple part of the Massingberd-Mundy range of products for several years, and we began the process of producing leather in 2021 as a part of our efforts to reduce waste and celebrate all that we produce.
- Leather, which is produced with cattle hides via a process called tanning, is a traditional material that has been made in the British Isles for centuries.
- Massingberd-Mundy leather is produced using a technique known as vegetable tanning. This method uses various vegetable tannins to preserve the hides and is the more natural method of leather production compared to chrome tanning. It’s a lengthy process, taking at least 4 months to complete.
- Very few tanneries are still in operation in the UK, and we are proud to work alongside Spire Leather, based in Chesterfield, to produce our leather.
Lovingly Handcrafted
- Finn Bracey, South Ormsby Estate’s leatherworker, has dedicated 3 years to learning the leather trade and focuses on practising traditional techniques with a modern approach to produce Massingberd-Mundy leather goods.
- Each item is made to order by Finn and has been uniquely designed, before being hand cut, dyed, and finished to the highest standards.
Caring for your leather
- Store your leather goods out of direct sunlight, as this can discolour and darken the leather.
- As it is a natural product, it may become dry and brittle over time – the use of either a leather conditioner or beeswax will revive it.
- Your items will be rigid upon initial reception but will soften with use and time.
- Undyed items will develop a natural patina over time – you may see marks and patterning across the leather with use. We think that this adds to the leathers’ character!
